Our story
Australia's chess shop since 1994
Chess World began in the early 90s as a bookshop in Carlton, a short walk from the Melbourne Chess Club. Then David, a former Australian Junior Champion, took it over and filled the shelves with chess sets. Since 2024 it has been run by Joanna Prokopova, a chess umpire who learned the game when she was four.
Thirty years is long enough to learn which sets disappoint and which ones people are still glad they bought. We only stock the second kind.
